Strengths: Stable, easy-to-install
Weaknesses: No instructions, slightly expensive
Summary: This dashboard Garmin mount is usable with the nuvi series. There is a CA law that prohibits GPS mounting on windshields. Therefore I needed this device. Although no instructions are included, installation is very simple. Just snap off the Garmin connector from the windshield mount that comes with your nuvi. Then attach to the round tip of the Garmin portable mount. The weighted base sits stably on your dashboard, and the device makes it easy to move the GPS between cars as well as to hide it when parked.

Strengths: Allows you to move the entire gps and mount to hide it.
Weaknesses: -
Summary: We haven't used this very long, but it seems to hold very well so far. We purchased it because thieves look specifically for GPS units in cars, and they also look to see if there is a mount or the markings left from a mount on the windshield. Then they have a good idea that there is a GPS inside.
With this you can just move the whole thing to hide all of it, and it doesn't leave suction marks on your windshield.

Strengths: Perfect solution for Garmin nuvi series.
Weaknesses: Bulky.
Summary: I bought a Nuvi 350 gps and this fiction mount works flawlessly with it. It does not move on the dash board when driving but I have not tried it in the extreme situations such as braking hard. It is a little bit more expensive than the other similar products. However, I strongly recommend that you buy this if you have a Garmin nuvi gps. No suction cup is needed for this product and this is a big plus. It is bulky and not easy to carry around. So please keep it from sight of gps thieves especially when you park your car in NYC.

Strengths: Well Made. GPS never moves even at high speed turns
Weaknesses: none
Summary: 2008-01-18 17:34:16 The friction mount stays right where you put it. On high speeds turns, it stays in place. Light weight and small enough to store in the console when not in use to keep out of sight. Better than the suction mount because it frees up you view over the dash.

Strengths: Doesn't move, works great..
Weaknesses: Not any that I can see..
Summary: I bought this for two reasons. 1. To easily switch from vehicle to vehicle.. 2. And most importantly.. I have a van with a huge dash and windshield. Using the suction cup would make the unit (Nuvi 760) sit too far away for ease of use (I haven't even tried it so I don't know how well the suction cup even works) This works PERFECT! It can easily be moved very close to me while driving, or moved to passenger side for use. Glad I got it.

Strengths: No need to fool with the window mount, and no worries about it falling off. Very easy to lay under the seat during stop-overs.
Weaknesses: It is a bit bulky to carry in carry-ons, but benefits outweigh problems.
Summary: All in all this is a great add-on for the Garmin - for convenience and for security. I've used it in a number of rental cars, and have no problems at all.

Strengths: Compact and stable
Weaknesses: None
Summary: Much better than the windshield suction mount. I don't have to worry about the GPS falling off and the ugly "ring" on the windshield any more. It stays on the dashborad and doesn't move a little even with sharp turns. Quite good overall quality. It fits my Garmin Nuvi 350 very well. It uses the same mount for windshield suction mount, so you can adjust the angle and direction of the GPS. Very nice design.

Strengths: Stable, portable, no suction cups or installation issues.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: The problem with portable navigators is that suction cups don't work well. In California, it's not even legal to stick a navigator to a windshield or side window. Garmin's "out of the box" solution was to provide a disk that gets glued onto the dashboard with thick double stick tape. Even at that, the suction cup sometimes slipped off. Plus, it did not allow the unit to be transferred. The disk is hard to remove, plus removing it leaves a mark. Using the suction cup on anything but glass is not likely to work.
This item offers an alternative to all that. The friction mount could not be easier. It merely sits on the dashboard in any desired location, and does not slip. The lock lever allows the stem to rotate, and a large, simple button lets the stem and the navigator slide right off. It is very easy to use.
The only down side, and this is not the fault of the friction mount itself, is that the navigator is awkward to put away with the stem stuck in it. My navigator has a carrying case, and it's not practical to use the case without removing the stem, and keeping the stem in the navigator instead of on the friction mount makes it hard to store the navigator. So despite the ease with which the stem detaches from the base, twisting the navigator off the stem is more practical for me. Unlike the suction cup version, I probably won't lose this stem, since it remains firmly in the base.
I'd recommend this for the owners of any compatible navigators, including existing owners and those buying a navigator now.

Strengths: Stable, easily portable, leaves no residue, nicely made
Weaknesses: Bulky, pricey
Summary: This is a great product. It's amazing how well a bean bag with rubber foam can hold a GPS unit in place. My only complaint being that this is almost a required added cost on top of the already expensive Nuvi units, due to the bad quality suction mount included with the Nuvi units.
If you've purchased a Nuvi, and used it with the included suction cup mount, you probably already know the suction cup won't stay on your windshield after a couple months use. (And for California and Minnesota residents, windshield mounts aren't even legal). This friction mount is the perfect solution. It's basically 4 heavy bean bags sewn on a sheet of foam. You could probably make the same thing at home by filling some stiff canvas fabric with metal BBs or pellets, and sewing them onto foam rubber drawer liner sheets found in any home goods store. Or, just buy this one from Garmin for $30.
The mount works well and stays put, and leaves no residue. It's also very easy to move from car to car; just pick up and place in new car. No levers and peeling off from a windshield like the suction mount.
Be careful when buying this unit that you do not accidentally purchase the bean bag base only (part #10906). The suction cup mount, though it looks similar to the stem on this unit, does not fit into the base. Also be sure to check compatibility with your unit before buying. This mount is made for the Nuvi, StreetPilot I Series, & C530, C550 units.

Strengths: Stability, easy of use, a huge improvement over the suction mount that falls off the windscreen constantly
Weaknesses: Bulky for packing on flights. Having to pay for a device because Garmin has a design flaw in its suction mount!!!
Summary: I was so sick of my Garmin OEM suction cup failing and sending my GPS Nuvi unit crashing to the floor boards of my car that I researched other alternatives. This product seemed to be the universal best choice.
I can sometimes be a spirited driver so I was a little concerned regarding the stability of this unit when faced with hard turn etc. But it sticks in place like it is glued to the dashboard.
Could not be happier with this purchase. And the lack of suction cup marks on the windscreen is another nice bonus.

Strengths: Portability, flexibility, and ease of use
Weaknesses: ugly
Summary: This mount is very good for Garmin GPS units. For people who do not want to use the window or dash mount, this mount is very useful. First of all, the mount is very portable so it can be hidden under the seat or moved to another car. Second, the mount can be placed anywhere on your dash. The surface does not even have to be flat. This unit is very secure and has not moved once even with abrupt stopping. The only problem with this unit is that it does not look very stylish.

Strengths: highly portable
does not mark dash or windshield
Weaknesses: a little large and cluncky
Summary: So far this mount as performed as advertised. Stays fixed on Jeep cherokee dash for any reasonable driving conditions. It is a little large, but can be easily stowed under a seat, or in the glove box if the stem is removed.

Strengths: Easy to use, No suction cup necessary
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I was looking for a way to secure my Garmin Nuvi on the dash of my car without leaving suction cup marks on the windshield. The friction mount is perfect for this. In addition, since it fits in the glove compartment when in bad parts of town you can keep it hidden from view unlike when a suction cup is stuck to the windshield. I've taken curves at high speeds and the friction mount doesn't move at all.

Strengths: Stays put, portable, cost effective
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: Great product. Stays exactly where you put it, but easily movable if you want to put your GPS out-of-sight. Also nice to be able to move the GPS to the passenger side if you have a passenger who wants to do the inputting, instead of having it plastered on your windshield. It's also much easier to reach the GPS with it on your dashboard instead of on the windshield.

Strengths: Easy to use, does not move or fall off like the window mount did.
Weaknesses: So far I have not found any
Summary: I am very pleased with the Garmin Mount. With the window mount I was in heavy traffic and it fell off the window another time we were in Florida with a rental car again using the the window mount and I could not get it off the windshield I finally had to use a ball point pen to pry it off. So this is a great product for people who travel.
