Sharper Image SI637 Ionic Breeze Quadra 15-Watt Silent Air Purifier

Strengths: Space-saving design. Silent operation. Includes instructional DVD and cleaning cloth. Does the job!

Weaknesses: Somewhat expensive. Best option is to purchase from Sharper Image's Outlet store, where the refurb units also have a 5 year warranty.

Summary: I've owned a few of these units and they work great. This full size model uses ~7 watts on High. There is also a Med and Low setting, which I rarely use. The collection blades are somewhat easy to clean. Just use a moistened paper towel and make sure all water is gone. I use the smaller unit in the bedroom and this full size unit in the living room. This model is being replaced by a newer version with more cleaning power. The traditional HEPA purifiers move more air, however they are loud and consume lots of electricity. As a result, you end up not using them. I have not compared this to the new competition from Radio Shack and Oreck which use similar technology.

Summary: Product was purchased from sharper image. Although reconditioned, product still in very good condition. As I have only been using it for several days, I still have no idea whether it's energy efficient.

Ionic Breeze Quadra poor performance

Strengths: You get what you pay for, cheap

Weaknesses: Does not actually clean the air or filter out anything

Summary: The Ionic Breeze has very poor performance. The theory sounds good, ionize particles in the air and they'll adhere to the grating or fall out of the air to the ground. Except that life isn't all theory. This product doesn't filter out anything... that's why there's no filters to change. The product has a Poor rating in consumer reports that I wish I had read before hand. If you want to filter your air, get your air ducts cleaned in your house and buy some real nice A/C filters and run the A/C fan. That will move more air in a few minutes than any Ionic Breeze could encounter in days of operation, and actually filter pollen and dust rather than ionizing it (wish doesn't work).
