 Homeowner model best suited for infrequent use Strengths: Makes quick espresso

Summary: 2006-10-03 04:21:44 I've had this unit for a little longer than a year. It's fine, but I wouldn't buy it again. It's a home model-- not industrial by any means.
Both carafes are glass. The coffee pot lid is hinged and must be carefully removed if you want to use the dishwasher. The espresso lid is not meant to come off also, but it fits in my dishwasher in 1 piece.
ESPRESSO
The handle kept getting loose. The 3rd time we tightened it, it broke and we ordered a replacement carafe.
It makes a fast cup (or two) of espresso, but the water temp exceeds 212 degrees-- not the traditional "just under boiling". The chamber lid screws on securely. The carafe base is plastic which stays firm but pops out easily if desired. I've never used the built-in steamer.
COFFEE MAKER
I already mentioned the dishwasher issue. The warming plate scratches easily, and has worn down significantly in a few spots.
The water reservoir holds 10 cups-- a significant amount. If you add 11, it overflows through the back vent-- which in my house is very close to the electrical outlet.
The glass reservoir indicator is on the right side and not easy to read.
Removing the carafe mid-brew leaks a small amount of product onto the base. The coffee tastes just fine.
SUMMARY
I paid a little over $80 for this unit at LNT. The black color is sharp but shows dirt and dust. It makes good tasting coffee and sub-par espresso. Very easy to use. Doesn't seem geared for everyday use. It would be a nice addition to a vacation home. Espresso connoisseurs will not be impressed, but for a fast cup of espresso or cappuccino, it does a fine job.
