Strengths: The Norton Name and reputation
Weaknesses: Very difficult to load and operate
Summary: I attempted to load the program and it didnot accept the product code printed on the lable. after 3 tries it was accepted. (to my dismay)Everything was a problem from there. I was unable to access my e-mail, the pc started "hanging", I had to keep rebooting and praying.
I tried to uninstall the program to no avail. I tried to restore to a previous date where the system operated properly and could only partially restore the system twice. I finally called the phone number on the package and was on hold fo 28 minutes. When I was connected, it was to someone in India. We were able to overcome the language problem and uninstall but it was very difficult. I still have some "minor system problems. DONOT USE NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2005!!! You Will be sorry.

What a rip
Strengths: A previous positive experience with Norton
Weaknesses: The entire product.
Summary: 2005-07-07 15:41:50 My experience began with upgrading my old Norton product. My first clue appeared when I couldn't oder from their online site. I finally called their "store" and after a commuciations exercise, I was finally allowed to purchase a copy. Unlike others, I had no problem installing the software, but after installation the problems began to appear. I began experiencing frequent hang-ups with IE 6.0, sp2. The only out I found was to reboot, which was sometimes impossible without a hard reboot. I also noticed a tremendous degradation of performance the longer each session ran until my system eventually hung up. Another oddity has occurred since installation; after rebooting, my PC couldn't find my DSL modem. Just another pain to overcome.
Their customer service site is a joke, only oriented at selling you more useless Norton junk. I'm not about to spend $29.95 to attempt to talk to their customer service; but I'm shopping elsewhere.

Strengths: None that I have found other than relying on the Norton name and past reputation.
Weaknesses: Functionality, imcompatibility and ease of configuration
Summary: Norton 2004 came preloaded on my HP Pavilion. I first found that my email would not work although set up properly. This was traced to the Norton firewall which was disabled - trouble was that it popped up again every time I shut down and rebooted requiring manual disabling. When I tried to go thru the Norton menu, it locked up, would not function and denied access to firewall options. I uninstalled firewall, rebooted and went to update. Updates loaded but gave an install error requiring shutdown. When I brought the system back up - the modem was missing. After over an hour with HP support (forget Norton's) - their only solution was a complete system recovery which, of course, required a reinstall of all my data & programs and loss of all work not backed up to the time of the Norton induced crash.
I'm attempting a total Norton uninstall and shopping softwares - TrendMicro is looking pretty good at this point.
PS My old Norton on my old system worked fine. Be very afraid and prepared to stay up late nights if you try 2004.

Very disappointed
Strengths: Had been using it with no problems since 2000
Weaknesses: Everything this time around
Summary: 2005-08-11 08:49:04 I was completely satisfied with Norton's 2000-2004 antivirus products. Then came 2005....I had to disable the firewall, and now it won't even give me the option to enable it even if I wanted to. Worst of all, it will not run an automatic weekly scan as I have programmed it to. No matter what I do it just doesn't work. I called their so-called phone support only to get someone from India who listened to my problem and after listening told me that he knew the fix for it, but I'd have to pay in order for him to help me. I hung up. So you pay for their product, and the only way they'll back it up is if you pay them again! Also, I have yet to see it delete any spyware. Every time I manually run a scan it comes up with adware and spyware......then tells me it can't delete it. So what's the use? It's time for my renewal and I'm buying elsewhere. The Norton name is no longer a selling point for me.

I upgraded from NIS 2003 to NIS 2004- professional ...
Strengths: Reputation of Norton
Weaknesses: Failure to meet expectation of reputation. Instability. Failure in install on one machine.
Summary: I upgraded from NIS 2003 to NIS 2004- professional on one machine, and personal version on another. (WinXP SP2)
Both installs were buggy and required uninstallation and reinstallation several times. The uninstallation process is very complex, and only automated if everthing is working correctly (in which case you do not need to uninstall). Both installs interfered with proper operation of Eudora 6.2, had frequent hard disk accesses, and noticable negative impact on performance. Caused hanging of multiple programs on both machines. I instituted every fix on the Symantec knowledgebase to no avail. Finally, manually uninstalled everything, cleaned the registry, and installed Trend Micro's PC-Cillin which worked flawlessly on the first install with no noticable hit on performance.
This product seems to have been released far in advance of readiness for the market. Caveat Emptor.
My advice: stay with your old version if it is working. OR Change brands. NIS 2004 is trouble.

Strengths: The box is attractive
Weaknesses: You need an IT department to clean up your computer after installation. 2003 works just as well
Summary: Purchased 2 weeks ago and have regretted every minute of it. The install process hangs repeatedly and you have to un-install and re-install to finally get it to work. "Work" is a term I use advisedly since I could never tell what NIS 2004 was supposed to be doing. Even Live Update caused the program to crash. I did find out the hard way that every time I had a problem with NIS 2004 it was making changes to my Registry. As one program after another became unusable I spent a few days with Symantec's Knowledge Base learning how to un-install 2004 a piece at a time.
Afterwards, I spent a few more days formatting and re-installing my hard drive and all programs.
If you have 2003 spend six dollars on an OEM disk to renew your subscription. Symantec hasn't earned the right to charge thirty four dollars for a renewal until they fix this piece of junk

Strengths: Seems to be adequate for what it is supposed to be.
Weaknesses: Lack of adjustability. Few choices on operating procedures. Difficult to adjust and understand. LITTLE OR NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT WITHOUT PAYING $30.00!!!!
Summary: 2004-02-21 17:44:49 Norton Internet Security 2004 seems to be adequate and as advertised. IF you own another Norton/Symantec Product such as System Works Pro 2003, BE PREPARED FOR A GRUELING INSTALL..THEN YOUR SYSTEM WORKS 2003 Professional Program WILL NOT RE-INSTALL OR WORK PROPERLY! These people MUST think they are Microsoft as COMPLICATED as this install is when you have OTHER NORTON PRODUCT(S)! You NEED TO BE AN I.T. PROFESSIONAL to un-install/install, re-install your Norton Products! At least this one and System Works 2003 Pro! BUYER BEWARE!!! THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT STINKS!

Strengths: The antivirus and firewall work well.
Weaknesses: Anti-Spam, Auto-Protect
Summary: 2004-07-07 08:41:49 I had bought Norton anti-virus 2003 and thought it worked extremely well. On several occasions it saved my computer from a major infection. When my subscription was up, I decided to buy Internet Security 2004 so I could have both the firewall and antivirus on one disc. There were problems right from the start. While the install went smoothly, there were almost no options as far as what the user wanted to install. Even selecting the custom install only gave you the choice of whether or not to install the AV. Then once I rebooted my machine, I found out that AV Auto-protect is incompatible with my soundcard (A soundblaster Audigy Platinum 2) Because of software I'm using with my soundcard, the autoprotect will not start when my computer does, and it cannot be manually started later. There isn't much point in having the AV software if it won't run in the background. I was using AV 2003 with this same system with absolutely no problems. The issue is addressed on Norton's website, but their solution was to simply no longer load the software for my soundcard on startup. What a bunch of bull. On top of all that, the anit-spam filter, whihc doesn't work very well, integrated intself into Outlook 2003 and cannot be disabled or uninstalled separately. If you try to disable it inside of outlook, when you start the program again, it has reenabled itself. IMHO, this is not the behavior of virus protection software, but a virus. I will never never buy a norton product again, and I probably won't wait a year for my subscription to be up to change products.

Strengths: It functions most of the time but has serious errors when it does not.
Weaknesses: D.R.M. in this product makes it not worth upgrading from previous versions.
Summary: 2004-09-09 18:20:44 I upgraded from Internet Security 2003 to 2004. It is not worth the money to upgrade to this product due to the digital rights management now built into it. You have to register it for it to function or it dies in 15 days. Buy the 2003 version and you can install it without having to activate it as many times as needed. When the SPAM tool fails it knocks out your email and causes the system to re-boot. Shuts down without warning and simply fails to protect your computer without warning.

Strengths: NA
Weaknesses: Lacks the ability to work on AMD processor platforms.
Summary: Program bogs down any process less than 750 MHz when the box claims it can work on a process of 133 MHz. They also fail to tell you before you buy that the program has a problem with AMD processors. Store will not take it back now that I have opened the package and put it on my machine.
Another problem is that customer support sucks. They only deal with you for free over email with a 5 day waiting list. Cost is $30 per problem if you want to call them. they should offer free help to get the program up and running.
