Strengths:
Size, easy menu to navigate, can control ALL aspects for picture and audio adjustments(but you will not have to change any picture aspects-great out of the box!). Very stable picture even w/movement.
Weaknesses:
REMOTE-not very useful. I can't program it to control my Pioneer DVD (NEW) and you can only program a 1 video and 1 cable box - thats it. Hard to believe! "Black" not super black butbetterthanexpected
Summary:
Well I ran this TV through it's paces for a week now. First I put a THX DVD in the player and ran the THX setup (this is a great and free way to "pro" adjust your picture).
I did not have to change a thing! Happy! Then I ran the Matrix for movement, Monsters Inc. for color and clarity and Saving Private Ryan for color wash and "unsteady" cimematography. I can't find fault. The DLP folks want you to beleave that you will have a smeared , screen door, poor contrast, bad blacks nighmare on your hands. Well, NO I say! I did my homework and viewed several DLP and LCD sets. Sony had the best picture (ya, even with the screen door effect!). DLP sets just gave me vertigo and headaches and I do see the rainbow effect along with poor digital conversion resulting in big boxes of pixils once in a while. Sorry, I just could not buy a DLP . Maybe if DLP had three color chips and not one, I would have got a DLP. Regular analog cable TV is up-converted better than I thought. Almost-again-Almost as good as HDTV. The bad...The remote is junk, and black is not super black, but I'm very happy. Oh I purchased a extended warranty for 4 years (MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS!) with SONY ($230) not Best Buy ($400). I never buy extended warrantys but my homework proved this is wise. make sure you call SONY about once a year stating that your picture is dimming. They will service the Bulb(not replace)and check picture calabration for free . Do this for four years. Do your homework. Yes look a DLP's and make your own move. Ps 50+" flat panel LCD's are on the way!!!(Consumer electonics show in Los Vegas 2005 has them) This will kill plasmas and will be the next "big one" we will buy, four or five years from now. Hope this helps.

I am planning to buy this TV. While I was reading your comments, I was impressed by your suggestion of buying extended warranty for 4 years from SONY($230). I am following your suggestion, but I am having a problem with Sony. I contacted them regarding buying extended warranty for this TV and they mentioned me a number (800-378-4590) to buy the extended warranty. This number belongs to a contractor/dealer of Sony and they are charging way high rates than Bestbuy. Could you please guide me, as to who you contacted in Sony for buying the extended warranty. Your help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

The Sony Extended Warranty is $230, if you buy the TV from Sony. I bought this TV from some other dealer and Sony was not ready to sell me the extended warranty for $230. So I bought the warranty from the dealer for $300 (3 years extended). I am really happy with the TV's performance. But I will not come to know the performance of the extended warranty unless I have a problem with the TV. Thanks for responding.

I went to Circuit City this afternoon to buy this TV. I was all set to write up the deal, but the sales manager tried to sell me the extended warranty. I said "no", but then he told me that the bulb will definitely blow out after 8,000 hours of viewing which is approximately 2 years. The manufacturer's warranty will not cover this or a power surge. If you receive a lemon TV it does not cover this either. A 2-year extended warranty would be $299. He said the bulb would cost over $300. I can't imagine buying a bulb every 2 years. I got so scared that I was not buying a quality set, that I walked out. What made you buy the warranty?

Hi!!!
I'm sure you must have heard of sony playstation 3. It is a gaming console which spits out a video of HDTV (1080i and 720p). So for that i'm conisdering this tv. Do u think it would be a good buy (considering that most of the times i would be playing games on this tv)???

WARRANTY & PS3 QUESTIONS:
I also found myself in the same dilemma (to warranty or not to warranty). After receiving this TV, which is great, I decided to go for the 4-year warranty. The set-up manual clearly states that the bulb WILL burn out at some point. This is the price you have to pay for saving big $$$'s from getting a projection TV. I bought the TV online and saved over $1000 (after tax and shipping) so I figured it was worth it.
AS for PS3 this TV would be outstanding. I currently have a Xbox hooked up to mine and the clarity and precision are amazing. No streaking. No ghosting. Perfect picture. I can only imagine the PS3 (and Xbox 360) will look incredible. This TV was built for digital and HD signals. And with projection you don't have to worry about screen burn-in like you do with plasma.
The TV is great. It's huge. I would reccommend everyone seriously consider the 50". Showroom floors can be deceiving. If you have to sit less than 9ft away, you can sometimes see the pixilation. I think optimal viewing would be at least 11-12ft back. If you have the room, this is the best choice out there.

If buying at BestBuy how do you get the Sony extended warranty?

Believe me, if you are buying the TV at Best Buy, the salesperson will try to sell you the extended warranty. I chose not to buy the extended warranty. I'll let you know if my bulb burns out and how much it costs me, but I can't imagine that the warranty is worth the cost.
